522 Congress St., Portland, Maine USA

From left:

  • Gilbert Stuart Portrait of the Rev. Jacob Bryan, Rector of Kilrush, in the diocese of Meath. In 1775 Stuart departed America for London because the American Revolution had distracted its citizens from patronizing the arts. In 1787, at the height of his popularity there, he abruptly left for Dublin, most likely to escape his creditors. He had amassed considerable debt leading a lavish lifestyle.
  • Attributed to Ira Chaffee Goodell Portrait of John Henry Wright. This is a very strong attribution. Until now described as American School but probably the previously “missing” portrait of one of two brothers - both the same size and on the same tulipwood support. Please see our catalogue when available online or in the printed edition for more details.
  • American School The Red, White, and Blue Drum
  • Rufino Tamayo Figura Sobre Estuco. Mixograph
  • Picasso Imaginary Portrait. Color Lithograph

From left:

  • Robert Lee Perry The Eagle. In 1976 the artist was commissioned by the Coast Guard to carve an eagle to serve as the figurehead on “The Eagle,” just barely visible in the image. Perry also painted the ship’s portrait with his figurehead in place. The painting then hung in the Coast Guard Museum until the artist’s death in 1991.
  • William Glackens Paulette
  • Edward Potthast Color Pencils. Wading

The medium of all lots illustrated is oil unless otherwise noted.
