![]() | Patriotic Emblem Florida,
1850-1868 Oil on canvas, in original frame The picture centering a spread-wing eagle gripping arrows and branches in its talons, above cactus plants, all underneath thirteen stars and over a banner inscribed In God Is Our Trust. This representation of a spread-wing eagle, with cactus plants and a banner inscribed In God Is Our Trust is an early variation of the state symbol and motto of Florida. The symbol was used unofficially during the 1850s and 1860s until 1868, when it was changed to the motto In God We Trust, which is used today both as the Florida state motto and the national motto. |

Carved and Paint Decorated Horse and Rider Toy Pennsylvania, early 19th century Pine 9 x 9.25 x 3 inches Depicting a man in a top hat and red coat smoking a cigar astride a white horse with brown spots and black mane and tail, on a rectangular base. Small horse and equestrian figures such as this were popular toys for children in the eighteenth and nineteenth century; many featured wheels and could be pulled about by the child. This delightful figural group, with twine reins, does not appear to have ever had wheels and survives in a fine state of preservation. It is illustrated in Bernard Barenholtz and Inez McClintock, American Antique Toys 1830-1900 (New York, 1980), p. 103.
