Painted and Stencil Decorated Blanket Chest

With yellow paint all over, the hinged lid with molded edge, the top and sides with red stencil decoration, raised on a molded base on short turned legs.

This blanket chest features construction elements and materials characteristics of Pennsylvania, and is a unique representation of painted blanket and dower chests made throughtout the state. The warm yellow ground and bold red-stencil decoration make a striking and pleasing statement that is desirable to collectors of painted furniture.

A possible identification for the artist of this boldly executed and vibrantly colorful still life may be the Carrie M. Barnitz listed in the 1900 United States Federal Census, age 19. A knitter of hosiery, she was born in Pennsylvania in 1880, and was the daughter of Christian S. and Melissa R. Barnitz of Middletown Borough, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
