James Hastrich
Maker of American Painted Furniture
in 1" and 2" scale

I have been making miniature American Painted Furniture, c.1680-1860, since 1979. My pieces are made by hand and true to scale in every respect. I work both on commission and by offering a piece I have selected to my customers, usually in a limited edition of 1 to 3. I have licensing agreements with a number of New York and New England museums giving me sole rights to reproduce, in 1" and 2" scale, specific pieces from their collections.

All pieces are constructed and finished using traditional methods and materials. Square nails are used when building case pieces; mortise and tenon joints, held together with wooden pegs, are used for tables, panel doors, etc.; and drawers are constructed with hand-cut dovetails. Fancy decorating techniques, i.e., putty or vinegar graining, smoke graining, brush stroke graining, etc. are done in the old manner.

I have been given permission to photograph and measure important pieces of American Painted Furniture from the following institutions:

The Shelburne Museum
Yale University Museum
Historic Deerfield
The American Folk Art Museum
The Maine State Museum
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (Historic New England).

Pennsylvania Architectural Chest with hand-cut dovetailed drawers, till with lid and valuables drawer inside, and fancy strap hinges. Monroe Fabian pictures the original chest in The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest on plate 165. Available as pictured in 2" scale, 8½" wide.

Taunton Chest with hand-cut dovetailed drawers, handmade escutcheons and pulls, complete with “TaunTon, R.C. 1729” (like the original) painted on the back of the chest. The original chest was recently auctioned at Christie’s. Available as pictured in 2" scale. 3¾" wide.

Rufus Porter Lift Top Box with a small tray/till inside, painted in Porter’s naive style. The original box is from Thurmont, Maryland, and was in the Mr. and Mrs. H. John Thayer collection. Available as pictured in 2" scale. 3½" wide.

New York Chest on backet base with hand painted floral motif on front panel. The original chest is pictured in The Magazine Antiques, May 1985, and was auctioned in 2008 by Northeast Auctions. Available as pictured in 2" scale. 3" wide.

Striped Dome Top Box with flamboyant colors, lined with wallpaper and newspaper. Northeast Auctions offered the original box at their 2008 New Hampshire Antiques Week auction. Available in two sizes: 1-1/8" wide (1" scale) or 2-5/16" wide (2" scale).
