Federal paint-decorated chest of drawers

Northeastern New England, probably Maine, circa 1830
White pine and birch with original painted decoration on the drawer fronts
and original brown stain on the case, with original brass rosettes on the splashboard,
replaced brass knobs and escutcheons
44½ x 41 x 16 inches

NOTE:
The case, splashboard and feet of birch, the drawers of white pine, and the drawer fronts decorated in highly stylized brownish black brushwork graining on a yellow ground dramatically contrasted against the original brown-stained finish of the case. A chest of slightly later date originating from the Rumford, Maine, region and exhibiting similar brushwork graining on its drawer fronts from the collection of The Maine State Museum is illustrated in Edwin A. Churchill and Thomas B. Johnson, “The painted furniture of Maine,” The Magazine Antiques, May 2000, pl. X, p. 784.

PUBLISHED:
Cynthia V.A. Schaffner and Susan Klein, American Painted Furniture (New York, 1997), fig. 5.21, p. 117, illustrated in color.
