Satsuma masters decorated pottery in extremely fine detail. Since it

July 28th, 2005
Satsuma masters decorated pottery in extremely fine detail. Since it would have taken many months to complete a single large object, masters usually worked on small pieces. Hence, small examples of Satsuma often sell for much more than large pieces. From left: the 4½" moon vase with a market scene brought $935; the double-gourd vase with butterfly design, $880; the incense burner with figural cartouches, $715; and the conical vase with golden dragon, $412.50.
