Black Powder Exempt from New York Gun Law

Betty Flood | February 18th, 2013

Black powder used in many reenactments is exempt from New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s NY SAFE Act, a new gun control law. “The entire predication of the bill is based on the assault rifle,” according to Rich Azzopardi, deputy press secretary to Governor Cuomo. “One of the key characteristics of the assault rifle is the detachable magazine for bullets. Anything involving muskets or black powder or that sort of thing is not covered in the bill....It’s just the magazines, and none of these weapons could be considered an assault weapon.”
