JMK Shows and Events held its new jewelry show on January 19 and 20 at the Pratt Mansions on Fifth Avenue, New York City. Signed pieces from Tiffany, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Buccellati were standouts. There were Roman coin rings for antiquarian aficionados, and trays of turquoise, coral, Lalaounis gold, and Kieselstein-Cord pieces.
According to Jacob Gipsman of Jacob’s Diamond and Estate Jewelry, jewelry from the Art Deco and Edwardian eras is particularly in vogue. One such beauty was a 10-carat diamond and platinum French Art Deco pin. Gipsman, who traveled to the show from Los Angeles with his business partner, Rigoberto Rodriguez, has been in business for almost 29 years. His inventory includes antique, estate, and modern jewelry, as was the case for most of the other vendors. Most of the dealers at the show buy and sell, and some redesign older pieces for their clients.
The Pratt Mansions lent an intimate atmosphere in which to view the jewelry. Over 700 people attended the two-day show, according to Allison Kohler, president of JMK.
Roumen Vragov of South Orange, New Jersey, probably the youngest dealer at the event, showcased new jewelry made by his wife, Manya Tessler. He explained that when they were getting married, Tessler decided to take a jewelry class at the 92nd Street Y so she could make their wedding rings. Vragov proudly modeled his 18k gold ring with two buffalo. When asked what his wife had designed for herself, he explained that their four-year-old business has kept them so busy she hasn’t had time to finish it. Tessler’s rings are unique conversation pieces, sometimes fitting across two fingers, with stones set on the bodies of the graceful animals she designs.
All the January dealers have signed up for the November 23 and 24 show, Kohler said. The show will expand into the ballroom of the Pratt Mansions in order to accommodate 15 additional dealers. The boutique feel of the show will remain, Kohler stated, and it will include women’s accessories.
