We are excited to announce a two-part sale with selections from important collections across Canada. Part one features Canadian folk art and historic objects, pre-1950, from the Collections of the late Jim Fleming, as well as June and the late David Chambers, and others. Part two offers Canadian folk art, post-1950, emphasizing Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces, from many renowned collections across Canada.
The featured work, ‘Man with Lobster Traps’ by Maud Lewis, is dated 1967. It is a rare image that was originally sold through Ontario artist John Kinnear. Kinnear was one of Lewis’ earlier supporters. He sent Lewis pre-primed Masonite boards and supplies. Sometimes Lewis would return the ?nished boards to Kinnear painted, for him to sell in Ontario. ‘Man with Lobster Traps’ was purchased directly from Kinnear, and could be considered one of Lewis’ rarest works. Maud Lewis, despite her physical limitations, is recognized internationally for her undying persistence to make the world a brighter place through art.
