Large size decorated wrought iron American fireplace roasting fork, Pennsylvania, ca. 1740-1780. Near perfect condition, great old surface and patina. Rare form, deep-cut, tooled, and decorated handle ending in three tines. The absolute best example you can find. This piece was the blacksmith's crowning achievement. Wonderful hand forging marks throughout. The best clamshell handle. Great incised and cut decoration throughout. Often the bride would have these items made for either her dowry or as wedding presents. They were primarily made for show purposes, much as the decorated show towels and linens. This great fork has no repairs, restorations, or additions. The surface is untouched. It measures 22½". Museum quality.
