Historic Portrait of Reubena Walworth Saratoga Springs, NY, Spanish American War Heroine

39 x 34 inches Great ornate original frame with a patent date of 1886.
Reubena graduated in 1896 from Vassar College. Her family had a proud history of military service, and wanting to do her part during the Spanish American War, she trained as an army field nurse at Saratoga Hospital. She died at age 31 in 1898 after contracting an illness while nursing soldiers returning from that war. There is a monument in her honor in Greenridge Cemetery, New York. Her mother, Ellen Hardin Walworth, was a founding member of the D.A.R. There was also scandal in her family when Reubena’s brother Frank murdered their abusive father. The third floor of the Saratoga Springs Historical Society at the Canfield Casino is devoted to the Walworth family. Her lovely original portrait may be viewed at Janet’s Antiques in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is offered for sale at $8500.
