This is the reverse of an elegant 2½" porcelain snuff

July 28th, 2005
This is the reverse of an elegant 2½" porcelain snuff bottle. When snuff arrived in China during the 18th century, laws restricted its use to the upper echelon of society. The demand for highly artistic snuff bottles was probably an outgrowth of snuff's social status, extreme value, and the small amount used. This 19th-century bottle sold for $990. Robert C. Eldred Company's Oriental Art Auction, East Dennis, Massachusetts, August 19-24, 1996.

$990.
