Japanese furniture was carefully crafted from well-seasoned wood with attention to design, joinery, and hardware. Offerings sold within their estimates, but the prices seemed modest in comparison to Western prices. The iron hardware on this 23½" high x 25½" wide captain's tansu was wonderfully hand wrought. The renowned Montreal painter Robert Savoie purchased it for $1430. Robert C. Eldred Company's Oriental Art Auction, East Dennis, Massachusetts, August 19-24, 1996.
