Virginia dealer Raymond Choe, who paid $46,200 for this Western style painting by Korean artist Park Soo-Keun (1914-1965), said he bought it for a client. Given its rough condition, it was estimated at $200/250. Park painted larger versions of this same scene, and this 1947 oil on canvas (16" x 22½") may have been a study for those works. It depicts contemporaneous political upheaval between World War II and the Korean Conflict. The leader of the group is shown in the right foreground issuing a proclamation, which a scribe is painting onto a red (Communist) banner while spectators watch intently. The Korean soldier in the background wears a red arm band. Eldred's photo. Robert C. Eldred Company's Oriental Art Auction, East Dennis, Massachusetts, August 19-24, 1996.
