A pair of painted leather fire buckets sold for $19,550 (includes buyer’s premium) at Central Mass Auctions Inc. in Worcester, Massachusetts, on August 31. The buyer was in the house, and the underbidder was on the phone. The buckets bear the name Lebaron Putnam, the date 1826, and “Prompt in Danger.”

According to auctioneer Wayne Tuiskula, the pair came from a Woodstock, Connecticut, estate and was sold unreserved. A previous appraisal document noted that Lebaron Putnam was born in Sutton, Massachusetts, on August 19, 1799, and lived there until 1830.
